Council gives go-ahead to EU budget for 2023
The Council approved the joint text on the EU’s general budget for 2023 which it had agreed in negotiations with the European Parliament on 14 November.
The required qualified majority for the approval was reached today, this means that the Council gives the go-ahead to the EU’s budget for 2023.
The adoption of the budget will be declared by the European Parliament once it has also approved the joint text.
The detailed information on commitments and payments per budget line is now available and linked at the bottom of this press release.
Background
Commitments are legally-binding promises to spend money on activities that are implemented over several years.
Payments cover expenditure arising from commitments entered into during the current or preceding years.
Negotiators of the Council and of the Parliament reached agreement on the EU budget 2023 on 14 November, within the deadline set in the Treaty. The formal approval of the agreement by both institutions is required. The European Parliament is expected to approve it on 23 November 2022.
