European statistics: Council and Parliament reach provisional deal

The Council and the Parliament negotiators reached a provisional political agreement to amend current rules on European statistics.

The rules provide the legal framework at EU level for the development, production and dissemination of European statistics.

This provisional deal will make the legal framework governing European statistics fit for the future, allowing statistical authorities to tap into the full potential of digital data sources and technologies, and making the framework more efficient and responsive to crises.

The provisional agreement was reached by the Council’s presidency and the European Parliament’s representatives, based on mandates from their respective institutions.

The provisional agreement is subject to approval by the Council before going through the formal adoption procedure.

Background

Regulation 223/2009 provides the legal framework at EU level for the development, production and dissemination of European statistics. Since the adoption of the regulation, society has changed profoundly. The European Statistical System now operates in a context driven by profound digital transformation that has created new information needs alongside the emergence of many digital data sources.

On 10 July 2023, the Commission proposed to amend Regulation 223/2009 to make the legal framework governing European statistics fit for the future and significantly improve the responsiveness of the European Statistical System to data needs.
